Keeping your unit running

Heat Pump Servicing in Nelson

If we fitted your heat pump, we'll keep it clean, checked and heating hard through the coldest Nelson mornings. Regular servicing is the cheap way to avoid an expensive repair.

Book a service or ask about a new install

For our own install customers, or a fresh quote if you're after a new unit.

No obligation. We'll get back to you as soon as we can, usually before the end of the same day.

Most heat pumps in Nelson want a service once a year, and coastal or hard-run units often need one every six to nine months. A service means cleaning filters and coils, checking the gas charge, testing the electrics and making sure it's still heating to the temperature it should.

Why Nelson's damp air and salt load up a heat pump fast

On those still, frosty winter mornings the smoky inversion air sits low over the central suburbs, and all that fine grit gets pulled straight through your filters and onto the coils. A clogged unit works harder, costs more to run and heats less. That's exactly the sort of grime a service clears out before it turns into a callout.

The older single-glazed timber villas around Washington Valley and Nelson City tend to run their heat pumps flat out all winter, which means more hours on the fan and the compressor. Hard-worked units drift out of tune sooner, so a yearly check keeps them honest. If yours has never really coped with the cold, that's often a sizing problem from the start, and it's worth reading up on how heat pump installation and correct sizing make the real difference.

We look after the heat pumps we installed

Straight up: we only service and repair the heat pumps we installed ourselves. We don't take on other companies' installs, because we know how our own units were fitted, wired and sized, and we can stand behind that work.

If someone else put your unit in and it's giving you trouble, the honest fix is often a fresh, properly sized system rather than chasing faults on an install we didn't do. We're happy to quote that, and you can get a feel for the heat pump installation cost before you decide. Once it's ours, servicing and any types of heat pump">repairs stay with us.

Coastal units in Tahunanui and Atawhai need a corrosion check

Salt air is tough on outdoor units. Homes near the water in Tahunanui, Atawhai and the coastal edge of Stoke cop constant salt spray that eats at fins, fasteners and the casing. On those units we check for corrosion, wash the coil down and make sure nothing's started to seize.

Down in the valley-floor cold pockets it's the opposite problem, with damp and frost loading the unit instead. Either way the interval comes forward. We service the same well-built Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps and Daikin heat pumps we install, and we handle heat pump installation across Nelson from the city out to Richmond.

What you'll notice when a service is overdue

You don't always get a warning light. More often it's the room taking longer to warm up, the unit running louder, a musty smell when it kicks on, or a power bill creeping up for the same comfort. Ice building on the outdoor unit or water dripping inside are both signs to call sooner rather than later.

Bigger homes running ducted heat pump systems have filters and drains tucked out of sight, so those especially benefit from a set service schedule. Not sure what you've got or when it was last looked at? Give us a ring on 027 725 2525 and we'll sort a time.

Heat pump servicing questions we get asked

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Once a year suits most homes in Nelson. If you're near the coast copping salt spray, or you run the unit hard through a valley-floor winter, every six to nine months is safer. A quick filter clean every few weeks between services keeps it breathing.

What does a heat pump service include?

We clean the filters and indoor coil, wash down and check the outdoor unit, and look for corrosion on coastal installs. We test the refrigerant charge, check the electrical connections, clear the drain, and run it to confirm it's heating to the temperature it should.

Do you need to clean heat pump filters?

Yes. Filters are the first thing to clog, and in Nelson's smoky winter air they load up quickly. Pull them out every few weeks, vacuum or rinse them and let them dry fully before they go back. Clean filters mean better heat and lower running costs.

Why is my heat pump not heating properly?

Usually it's a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant, or an outdoor unit iced up or restricted by salt-caked fins. Sometimes the unit was undersized for the room from the start. Clean the filters first, and if it's still struggling, call us and we'll take a look.
